Agents for trade spend and claims: evidence first, decisions with people, consent always

Trade spend is one of the largest lines on a consumer company's P&L and one of the least evidenced. Supervised agents can evaluate every promotion and check every claim — provided they never approve money on their own and never use customer data without consent.

Key takeaways

  • Promotions get repeated because the last one was never measured.
  • Agents are good at assembling evidence; people should keep decisions that move money.
  • Under the DPDP Act, consent checks belong inside the agent's workflow, not after it.

Schemes multiply across states, channels and festive windows. Distributor claims are checked by hand. A promotion that ran last Diwali is repeated this year because there is no evaluation to say otherwise. This is where supervised agents can help — carefully.

Where the line sits

Each agent has an autonomy level. The evaluators observe and suggest; the claim validator drafts but never approves; the consent guardian may only remove a record from a campaign, never add one. Everything is logged, and a kill switch stops all agents at once.

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 makes consent and purpose central to any use of customer data. Building those checks into the agent's workflow is simpler — and safer — than auditing campaigns afterwards.

For executives

What this means for your bank

  1. Evaluate every promotion before repeating it.
  2. Keep claim approvals and price changes with people.
  3. Put consent checks inside agent workflows.
