The topic map: which page answers which question

This site already answers most of what a data buyer types. Campaigns fail here by commissioning new content instead of routing the right existing page to the right intent — which costs a quarter and usually performs worse.

01 The shape of it

Five intents, five page families

A buyer moves through these in order, and skipping one is why a strong ad lands on a page that answers a question nobody asked yet.

01

Definitional — what is this thing?

Early, wide, and mostly not commercial. Owned by encyclopaedic content and product names, so it is worth answering and not worth chasing.

02

Pattern — is this the right shape for us?

The buyer has a problem and is choosing an architecture, not a vendor. This is where the commercial term actually lives.

/data-hub
03

Vendor — how does this compare?

High intent, low volume, and the page has to be fair to be credible. Seven comparison pages exist, each leading with the real distinction rather than a feature grid.

04

Role — what does this mean for my job?

The buyer is convinced of the category and needs to see their own week in it. Five checklists, one per executive, each built on the numbers they defend.

/for-cfo, /for-coo, /for-cmo
05

Proof — has anyone like us done it?

The last question before a meeting is granted, and the one most sites answer with logos instead of figures.

02 Questions

Six questions before a campaign goes live

Every one of these has cost somebody a quarter at some point.

  • Which of the five intents is this campaign aimed at, and does the landing page answer that intent rather than the one after it?
  • Does the page we are routing to have a next step that suits how early the buyer is?
  • Are we bidding on a definitional head term that a product name already owns?
  • Does the ad promise something the page delivers in the first screen, or two scrolls down?
  • Is there an existing page that already covers this, and are we about to build a second one that competes with it?
  • If this works, which page picks up the traffic next — and does it link there?

03 Sequence

Building a campaign from what exists

The whole point of this sequence is that step four is usually empty.

0101Start from the trigger and the persona, not from a keyword list.
0202Find the page family that matches the intent. Nearly always one of the five above.
0303Check the page answers the exact question in its first screen. If it does not, fix the page rather than writing a new one.
0404Write new content only for a question with no page. Note it, do not assume it.
0505Pick the offer that fits the stage — calculator early, evaluation guide late, demo only when they have a number in mind.

06 Questions

Frequently asked

Should we write content for head terms like "data hub"?

Answer them, but do not build the campaign on them. Definitional queries are dominated by encyclopaedic results and by a vendor product with the same name; the buying intent sits in the longer, more specific phrasings underneath.

How do we know if a page is missing rather than just weak?

Ask what the buyer typed and read the first screen of the page you would send. If it answers a different question, the page is weak. If nothing on the site answers it at all, that is a gap worth writing — and it is rarer than it feels.
